Tallahassee’s Second Senior Center Opens its Doors

City to Host Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Sept. 23

Options for lifelong learning, wellness, fitness, art, music and more are poised to expand! The City of Tallahassee cordially invites the community to the ribbon cutting ceremony on Sept. 23 at 10:30 a.m. to celebrate the opening of the 40,000 square foot, state-of-the-art, second Tallahassee Senior Center. Attendees can enjoy refreshments and tour the facility immediately following the ceremony. Located at 2743 Welaunee Boulevard, the second senior center is a dream come true for the community’s growing population of active adults.

The new, additional facility designed for active adults ages 50 and older houses a double-size multipurpose gym with six indoor pickleball courts and two basketball and volleyball courts. The space will also accommodate table tennis and fitness classes. The Lifelong Learning wing will offer educational classes, art programs, cards and other games, and health and wellness opportunities.

“Opening the second Tallahassee Senior Center is a testament to the City’s commitment to transformative projects that enhance the well-being of our community,” Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey said. “The additional center will allow the City to better serve the growing senior population and the need for expanded programs for current and future residents.”

Since 1978, Tallahassee Senior Services has operated primarily from the historic Armory building on North Monroe Street. It was built in 1935 to accommodate military troops. Today, the building is nearly bursting at the seams with classes, games, concerts and more. Between the flagship location and 14 neighborhood sites, staff and volunteers coordinate nearly 200 activities a month and host programs that serve approximately 500 seniors a day.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome the community through the doors of Tallahassee’s second senior center. This beautiful building will be a place where friendships grow as seniors stay active, engaged and connected,” Senior Services Manager Ceola Grant said. “We know the profound impact that investing in projects like this has on our community’s quality of life and appreciate everyone that helped get us to this point.”

The second senior center, like the original Tallahassee Senior Center on N. Monroe Street, will be available for the entire community to enjoy. Hours of operation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Schedule information for both centers, the one located on Welaunee Boulevard and the one on N.
