TFD Extinguishes Kitchen Fire on Settlers Court
October 16, 2024
On Wednesday, October 16, at approximately 7:39 a.m., the Tallahassee Fire Department (TFD) responded to a house fire located on Settlers Court. TFD crews arrived on scene and found heavy smoke coming from a residential structure. Firefighters made entry into the home and found fire located in the kitchen area, which had begun spreading into the attic.
With an aggressive attack by responding crews, the fire was brought under control and extinguished preventing further spread and damage throughout the home.
The Tallahassee Fire Department was assisted on scene by the Tallahassee Police Department and the City of Tallahassee Utilities.
The fire appears to have originated in the kitchen due to unattended cooking.
Kitchen fires are a leading cause of home fires nationwide. Below are tips from TFD to help reduce the risk of an accidental kitchen fire:
- Never leave the stove unattended while cooking.
- Set a timer to remind yourself to check on your dish.
- Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove so no one can bump them or pull them over.
- Move things that can burn, like kitchen towels, away from the stove.
- Ensure you have properly installed and maintained smoke alarms to alert you and your family to a fire 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
